Achal Surinder "Boney" Kapoor (born 11 November 1955) is an Indian film producer primarily associated with Hindi cinema, in addition to Tamil and Telugu cinema.

Early life

Kapoor was born as Achal Surinder Kapoor^[1] in 1955, the son of Surinder Kapoor who was a Bollywood film producer, and Nirmal Kapoor. Born into a Punjabi Hindu family, he had an Arya Samaji upbringing.^[5] His younger brothers Anil and Sanjay are both actors and producers.

Career

Kapoor started his career working under legends like Shakti Samanta. The most famous film produced by him remains the Shekhar Kapur directed sci-fi film Mr India starring his brother Anil Kapoor and his future wife Sridevi. It was the second biggest hit of 1987 and remains a cult classic in India. The film was known for several of its lines and songs, including Sridevi's "Miss Hawa Hawaii" performance and Amrish Puri's quote "Mogambo khush hua" ('Mogambo is pleased', although the literal translation is 'Mogambo became happy', it's a very awkward construct and hence the humour), which is one of the most famous quotes of Bollywood and has become synonymous with Puri.^[6]

Sridevi and Boney Kapoor’s love story was far from traditional, but it was a ‘dream come true’ for him

“When I met her it was almost like dream come true,” he said. “The few words that she spoke in broken Hindi and broken English, they touched me, they moved me and I got curious to know her more,” he recalled. The 1987 film was a big project in those days and it eventually turned out to be a big milestone for Sridevi herself. She was already the highest paid female actor of the time, and Mr India cemented her position even more.

Boney recalled at the summit that Sridevi was getting paid around Rs 8-8.5 lakh per film at the time and when he went to talk about the fee to her mother, she quoted Rs 10 lakh. To show his willingness to work with Sridevi, Boney said, “I’ll pay Rs 11 lakh.”
