Hinohara.
In Tokyo, Hinohara was known as the honorary head of St. Luke’s International Hospital, as well as a best-selling author. His book, “Living Long, Living Good,” has sold more than 1.2 million copies.
In Fairhaven, his legacy is directly linked to Manjiro Nakahama — the first Japanese person to live in America — and the house at 11 Cherry St. where Nakahama lived with Captain William Whitfield.
Fairhaven Tourism Director Chris Richard said in a 2017 interview with The Advocate that if it weren’t for Hinohara’s efforts, the town “wouldn’t have it today.” In 2008, Hinohara — who was 97 at the time — led a fundraising initiative to buy and restore Whitfield’s home.
Hinohara donated the home back to the town of Fairhaven in 2009.
“He, at 105, was still very upbeat,” Whitfield-Manjiro Friendship Society President Gerry Rooney said, shortly after Hinohara's death. Rooney noted he was aware of the physical debilitation the doctor was facing, but said his mind was “at 110 percent as usual.”
