    Brian Molko (born 10 December ) is a Scottish-American musician who is the lead vocalist, guitarist, and lyricist of the band Placebo. He is known for his nasal high registered vocals, feminine/androgynous appearance and aggressive guitar style and tunings.

    Early life

    Molko was born in Brussels, Belgium, to an American father of French and Italian heritage and a Scottish mother. He had an older brother named Stuart who died in August after a short illness.[1] Molko's family moved frequently during his childhood due to his father's career as a banker; the family lived in Dundee in Scotland, Liberia, Lebanon, the village of Longeau in Belgium, before eventually settling in the town of Sandweiler, in Luxembourg.[2]

    Although Molko was brought up in a strict household that disapproved of artistic expression (his father wanted him to become a banker), he rebelled by assuming an androgynous image, wearing nail polish, lipstick, and eyeliner, and listening to punk music. He initially attended the European School of Luxembourg (ESL), but left because he was bullied.[3] He completed his secondary education at t

    Placebo is the debut studio album by British alternative rock band Placebo. It was released on 17 June by record label Virgin.[3] It is the only album recorded with drummer Robert Schultzberg before his departure from the group.

    The album was a commercial success in the UK, reaching number 5 in the UK Albums Chart. It spawned five singles, including "Nancy Boy" and "36 Degrees". The album was remastered and reissued in for its tenth anniversary, including demos and a DVD featuring live performances and music videos from the album.

    Placebo were formed in with the partnering of Brian Molko (vocals, guitar) and Stefan Olsdal (guitar, bass). At the time, Olsdal was taking guitar lessons and was on his way home when he met Molko at the South Kensington tube station. Molko, observing that Olsdal had a guitar strapped to his back, invited Olsdal to watch him perform at a local bar. On the strength of Molko's performance, Olsdal decided that the two of them should start a band.[4]
