Panamarenko is one of the few top artists from post-war European avant-garde whose image has not yet been canonically compressed. As an artist, inventor and visionary, he has for many years conducted exceptional research into concepts such as space, motion, flight, energy and gravity. His work is a combination of artistic insight and technological experiment. This means that in Belgium, he is the absolute key figure of avant-garde art from the second half of the 20th century onwards.
The M HKA wants introduce the broad public to the work of Panamarenko in all its facets by developing a documentation centre around his particular oeuvre. The M HKA has mapped virtually the entire oeuvre of the inspired artist by applying a thematic and chronological structure. This resulted in the successful exhibition Panamarenko Universum in 2014. This screening of his oeuvre did not only lead to clarity and structure, it also afforded depth and accessibility. Panamerenko (1940-2019) is a contemporary Belgian artist known for his mixed-media sculptures of airplanes, zeppelins and flying saucers that bear witness to great technical insight and an unbridled feel for the fantastic.
Despite being modeled after aerodynamic engineering, Panamerenko's works are not necessarily capable of flight—an irony deliberately invoking the sentiment found in the myth of Icarus. But he remains steadfast in his search for technical solutions to help him achieve his ultimate utopia – human-powered propulsion and flight. Most of his work involves the history of engineering and aviation as a metaphor for failure, hope, and human exploration.
Born Henri Van Herwegen on February 5, 1940 in Antwerp, Belgium, he was educated at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. In 1968, one of the artist’s biggest influences Joseph Beuys invited Panamerenko to exhibit his Flugzeug piece at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie.
