Karel Appel was born in Amsterdam on 25 April 1921. Although Appel had already made attempts at sculpture, his sculptures made of scrap were not very well received. Sommige oude kleurpigmenten zijn zeer giftig en worden nu niet meer gebruikt.
Het palet van Anders Zorn

- Ivoorzwart
- Titaanwit
Met deze kleuren kon Zorn ook mooie groenen en blauwen maken. Ivoorzwart is namelijk blauwachtig zwart; gemengd met veel wit wordt een zacht blauw verkregen. Als dat blauw geplaatst wordt naast een kleur oranje (gemaakt van rood, oker en wit) wordt de blauwe kleur door het oog versterkt. Dit verschijnsel staat bekend als het simultaancontrast. Gemengd met gele oker ontstaat een soort groen.
